Brief Negotiated Interview Measuring Fidelity Step by Step

Delivering effective brief interventions is key to the success of SBIRT. So how do we know if practitioners have gained the knowledge and skills necessary to provide a high quality brief intervention? Like any other complex skill, it takes time, practice, and feedback to excel at this clinical skill.
The webinar will present one model for measuring fidelity to the Brief Negotiated Interview. The UMKC SBIRT Training for Health Professionals Project has developed a protocol for coding and coaching health practitioners in delivering the Brief Negotiated Interview. This presentation will guide participants through the process of coding and coaching an audio-recorded Brief Intervention session using the “Brief Intervention Observation Sheet.”
• Discuss the importance of providing on-going coaching and feedback to SBIRT practitioners after providing the initial training.
• Review a model for assessing fidelity to the Brief Negotiated Interview.
• Explain the process and protocol for providing practitioners with coaching and feedback.
Denna Vandersloot, M.Ed is a SBIRT and Motivational Interviewing consultant, trainer, and coach. She has worked with a number of state, county, treatment, and primary care organizations to promote the adoption and implementation of Motivational Interviewing and SBIRT. Denna has worked with a number of federally funded SBIRT projects across the country (SBIRT Oregon Primary Care, SBIRT Washington Primary Care Integration, and the University of Missouri Kansas City SBIRT Training for Health Care Professionals) to provide curriculum development, training and consultation on implementation. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers
