Dr. Tosan Oruwariye presents on her and her staff’s experience implementing SBIRT in school-based health centers in the Bronx, New York. The presentation covers how Dr. Oruwariye gained buy-in, outreached to the school, prepared for the sites and her staff to deliver SBIRT, and evaluated the program. She also discusses opportunities and challenges and provide suggestions on how to address the challenges.

Substance use by adolescents is a significant public health problem and is associated with both acute and long term health problems. The American Academy of Pediatrics and other organizations recommend routine screening and brief intervention to prevent or reduce substance use as part of routine care for adolescents. This learning community focuses on the process of SBIRT (Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) as is being implemented in youth audiences.
Tosan Oruwariye, M.D. completed her internship and residency training at Montefiore Hospital. She obtained a Masters in Public Health at Yale University, and completed her training in Preventive medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
Dr. Oruwariye practiced as a Primary Care Pediatrician at Montefiore Hospital, where she developed her interest in primary care research and School Health. She obtained a Masters in Clinical Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and continued her interest in school health as the Medical Director of Community Based Services at Morris Heights Health Center and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she continues to teach and precept medical students and residents.
As the Chief Medical officer at Morris heights health center, Dr. Oruwariye, is interested in adolescent reproductive health and alcohol and substance use in youth, and has been involved in school health research with various abstracts and publications.
